You can help save lives of animals like Valentina and Little Eric.

Valentina arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter heavily pregnant and in need of urgent care. During a traumatic labour, she tragically lost two kittens, while one tiny survivor, Little Eric, defied the odds. Thanks to swift action from the veterinary team at Blythman and Partners, both mother and kitten pulled through.

Little Eric was adopted into a loving home in October 2024, where he’s blossomed into a playful, confident kitten. Valentina meanwhile had to recover from her pregnancy before undergoing spay surgery. After a period of care, Valentina was rehomed in March 2025.

Cats can become pregnant from just four months old, and pregnancy can pose significant risks to their health. Valentina endured a complicated labour, needing an emergency vet visit when one of the kittens became stuck. The vet warned that if they couldn’t remove the kitten, Valentina might not survive. Fortunately, they succeeded, giving Valentina and Little Eric a second chance thanks to the support of our community.

At Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter we follow protocol in neutering all of our animals either on site, or by giving a voucher for a future operation once an animal is the right age. Neutering not only prevents unwanted litters but also protects against certain cancers and reduces risky behaviours like roaming, when cats wander away from home, often to seek mates, defend territory, or explore. Unneutered cats are more likely to roam, which increases the risk of injury, accidents, getting lost, or contracting diseases from other animals.
