Chidi's Journey
Chidi, a two-year-old crossbreed stray, arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter in July 2024 after wandering the streets alone, scared, and neglected. When he first came to us, Chidi was in a dreadful state, his fur severely matted to the point where it hindered his ability to walk or even see properly.
His journey to recovery began with an emergency grooming session to free him from the tangled mess of fur. The neglect had been so extreme that parts of the grooming process were painful for Chidi, especially around his legs, where his skin was sore. He was particularly anxious when the scissors came near his eyes to clear the fur that had obscured his vision for so long.
Life in the Shelter
Chidi’s Strong Spirit
The amount of fur removed from Chidi was astonishing; when the process was complete, he looked like a new dog. And, true to his resilient spirit, Chidi’s mood brightened quickly as well. While toys didn’t interest him much, he loved wandering around our agility pens, regularly returning to our animal care team for strokes and fuss between his little adventures around the pen.
Even in his interactions with other dogs, Chidi showed us his heart of gold and playful spirit. He was overjoyed to meet them, even getting playful — a heartwarming sight considering the frightened, withdrawn dog who first arrived. Chidi soon became a favourite among the shelter staff, his happy-go-lucky attitude charming everyone. We knew it wouldn’t be long before he found his forever home.
Finding A Forever Family
That’s when his new family came into the picture. From their first meeting, it was love at first sight. Chidi was quickly taken into foster care, and we all had everything crossed for him. The glowing updates and adorable photos that followed showed Chidi thriving in his new environment, and it came as no surprise when his foster family decided to officially rehome Chidi not long after taking him into foster. Chidi now has a forever home, where he is loved and cherished, just as he deserves.
