Firework Anxiety: Read Here for 10 Tips to Help Your Pet Through Firework Season
18th October 2024 BlogDoes your pet suffer from firework anxiety?
Imagine this, you and your pet are sitting comfortably on the sofa at night, both of you slowly drifting off to sleep while the tv rolls in the background and suddenly BANG! Someone has let off a firework and your pet’s world view has absolutely shattered and it’s time to panic.
Does this sound familiar? Follow these 10 tips to reduce firework anxiety and keep your pet as calm as possible.
1 – Keep Pets Indoors – If you know fireworks are likely, keep your pets inside to prevent them from getting startled and running off. Even if they’re usually calm, the unpredictable nature of fireworks can make pets act out of character.
2 – Close Windows and Doors – This helps muffle the noise and keeps pets from escaping if they get spooked. Fireworks can startle even the calmest of pets, and an open door or window can quickly become an escape route if they’re frightened.
3 – Make sure your pet is microchipped – One of the most crucial tips we can give is to make sure your pet is microchipped, so that if the worst happens and they DO somehow get out, they have a much higher chance of being reunited with you. According to Petlog, out of the 5,000 dogs and over 20,000 cats that were reported missing between January 2023 to June 2024, 74% of dogs and 62% of cats were reunited with their owners thanks to microchips.
4 – Walk Dogs During the Day – Take your dog for their walk earlier in the day to avoid peak firework times. Fireworks are usually set off in the evening, so getting your dog plenty of exercise in the daylight will not only avoid fireworks but help them feel more relaxed by evening.
5 – Talk to Your Vet – In extreme cases of firework anxiety, pheromone diffusers or medication might be needed. Your vet can help find the best solution for your pet.
6 – Use Background Noise – Turn on some music or the TV to help mask the sound of fireworks. A calm, familiar sound can make a huge difference to how much of the firework noise your pet hears, making them feel safer and less aware of the outside noise.
7 – Create a Safe Den – Set up a cosy spot where your pet feels secure. Make sure they’re settled there before fireworks start. This could be a crate, a favourite bed, or just a quiet room where they feel safe. Let them retreat to this space on their own terms.
8 – Provide Distractions – Toys, treats, and chews can help keep their minds off the noise. Keeping their focus on something enjoyable can distract them from the sound of fireworks outside and provide comfort.
9 – Stay Calm – Pets often mirror our emotions, so if you stay calm during fireworks, it can help reduce your pet’s firework anxiety.
10 – Keep Them Company – If possible, stay with your dog during fireworks. They’ll feel more relaxed with a familiar person nearby and knowing they aren’t alone can make a huge difference. Even just being in the same room can help them feel reassured.
By following these tips, you can help your pet through the stress of fireworks and manage their firework anxiety.
