Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter pays tribute to Timmy, a 17-year-old black cat whose courageous journey from recovery to adoption epitomised the spirit of #ForeverHomeFriday. Timmy, who faced the challenges of hyperthyroidism and a significant surgical procedure, passed away in February 2024. Yet his legacy endures, inspiring the community to embrace the adoption of senior pets.
Affectionately known as Timmy’s Troubled Tail, his narrative began when he was surrendered to the shelter and diagnosed with a lifelong thyroid condition. Despite his health battles and partial deafness, Timmy’s will to live shone brightly, captivating the hearts of staff. During his recovery, Timmy was lovingly fostered by one the dedicated Shelter employees. This period not only helped him heal but showed his spirit and strength, aided by the immense support we the Shelter has for its furry friends.
After 155 days of care at the shelter, his story took a joyful turn as he found his forever home, where he was cherished as the sole pet.
Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, whilst saddened by his loss, celebrates the affection and vitality that older pets like Timmy can offer. His resilience serves as a poignant reminder of the value of giving senior animals a loving home.
Matthew and Kelly, Timmy’s adoptive parents, reflected on the impact he had on their lives: “Initially, we thought we were doing Timmy a favour, but in truth, it was he who enriched our lives immensely.” They shared memories of Timmy making every corner of their home his own and described the blankets he ‘conscripted’ into his service, including a favourite pink one. His presence brought a unique joy to their everyday routines.
Expressing their deep appreciation, the couple extended their gratitude to the shelter, especially for the medical support provided for Timmy’s condition and to Katie, the staff member who facilitated his adoption. They pledged a donation to the shelter in memory of Timmy, to support the continuous care for other animals in need.
Timmy’s Troubled Tail, laden with challenges, underscores the unwavering support of the shelter staff and the wider community. As the shelter shares his tale, it becomes a beacon of hope, encouraging more individuals to open their homes and hearts to senior pets, assuring these animals’ latter years are filled with affection and respect.
