A record breaking day
The 2024 Great North Run set the world record for the largest half-marathon in the world, with over 60,000 runners taking part. Over 170 runners took part for Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter raising over £50,000 to date. This total continues to grow with donations still coming in and we thank all of our runners who took part in the adult and junior run.
On Sunday 8 September, the Shelter was present in the charity village and we were glad to see so many of our runners visiting our tent, where they enjoyed a selection of snacks, hot and cold refreshments, and a sports massage from personal trainer, Cal Leaver, who kindly volunteered their services.
After the first wave of runners set off at 10:50, we had our first arrivals at around 12:50, with the first two runners achieving an astounding time of around 1 hour and 20 minutes! After the first two arrived, the floodgates opened and it wasn’t long before the charity village was full to the brim with runners.
We were also delighted with the number of staff members who decided to take the plunge and run for the Shelter, including our very own Chief Executive Chris Bray, who said:
“I was super proud to have run alongside so many of you in this year’s Great North Run, supporting Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter. Your dedication, energy, and generosity will ensure that we can continue to provide the best possible care for the dogs and cats who rely on us. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for choosing to run for our shelter and for being such an important part of our community.”
The team here at the Shelter can’t thank everyone enough for making it such an amazing day and for raising such a fantastic amount of money for us. All the money raised will go towards things like necessities for our animals such as: food, veterinary care, medication, and kennel maintenance. The money will also go towards the general running costs of the Shelter such as maintenance and electricity.
Once again all of us here at The Shelter would like to thank everyone for the day and we can’t wait to do it all over again next year!
