Jessie and Charlie's Journey

Meet Jessie (Black and White) and Charlie (Ginger), two cats who came to Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter under difficult circumstances in June. They were found abandoned in their former home after their owner moved away, leaving them behind. They were brought to us by the Council and we quickly noticed how kind-hearted they were despite what they had been through.

Their Health Journey

When Jessie and Charlie arrived, they both had severe gingivitis. To ensure there were no underlying issues, we ran several tests, including screenings for FLV and FIV, which thankfully came back negative. Jessie’s gingivitis started to improve with time, and after a thorough dental check-up and care, she was back to her usual self.

Charlie’s recovery took a bit longer. Although he initially showed progress, he had a flare-up that required further treatment. Another FIV test confirmed he was still clear, and our vets advised that he would need regular dental care to keep his gingivitis manageable. His condition will need attention and ongoing vet visits.

Despite their health issues, Jessie and Charlie brought warmth to the shelter. Jessie, always curious, quickly became a staff favourite, enjoying sunny spots and claiming the best places to lounge. Charlie, a little more reserved, showed a gentle, grateful side. He liked staying close, quietly watching the staff as if to thank them for their care.

Whilst they were two truly lovely cats, they did have to stay here for a little longer than they’d have liked, partly due to their ongoing medical issues but also due to the fact that they came as a pair. Unfortunately, it’s a common occurrence to see pairs of cats not get as much attention as they deserve. We believe that it’s due to worries surrounding potential extra costs that another cat brings.

However, there are many benefits to adopting a bonded pair, for example, coming as a bonded provides cats with companionship and also keeps them more mentally and physically healthy, and reduces the likelihood of behavioral problems. You also get the added bonus of getting double the love without necessarily having to double the effort.

Now renamed Josie and Butters, they’re thriving in a home that truly appreciates them. Josie is bold about wanting attention; she’ll rub against your legs and flop down, asking for strokes. If you stop, she’s quick to remind you with a little meow—or even a playful nip! Butters is more reserved but always finds his way close, squeezing onto any available sofa or chair space to nap right beside his family.

Their new family calls them “absolutely lush,” and it’s clear why. After a rough start, Josie and Butters have found a place where they’re loved and can fully enjoy life as cherished companions.
