Mac's Journey

Mac, a fourteen-year-old border terrier, came to Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter in August 2024 as a stray. Despite his age related conditions upon arrival, Mac’s gentle nature shone through immediately. He was friendly with our team, but it was clear he needed some help to get back on his paws.

The first step in his recovery was addressing his dental issues, which had been causing him significant discomfort. Mac’s teeth were in poor shape, in fact the vet said they were in the worst condition they’d ever seen, which made eating difficult, but after a successful dental procedure, where Mac had an astonishing 27 teeth removed, he began to enjoy his food once again. With his health improving, we were hopeful that Mac would soon settle into his new environment. – arthritis too

However, things didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped. Mac struggled to find comfort at the shelter, pacing and appearing restless. After careful observation, we suspected that Mac was in the early stages of dementia.

Foster Care and Finding a Forever Home

One particular family took an instant liking to Mac. They understood his special needs and felt prepared to offer him the calm and loving home he required. Mac was placed with them in foster care, where he flourished. He responded well to the quiet environment, finding peace in familiar routines. The glowing updates we received from his foster family reassured us that Mac was finally where he belonged.

Not long after fostering Mac, the family decided to make it official. Mac had captured their hearts, and they wanted to give him the stable, loving home he deserved. During his foster, Mac was given some medication to help combat his early stage dementia and upon his official rehoming, he was a totally different dog, appearing very alert and coming to see everyone for treats which was wonderful to see. In his new forever home, he can now enjoy his twilight years, surrounded by warmth and affection.

Mac’s journey may have been long, but it’s a testament to the fact that every dog, no matter their age or condition, deserves a chance at happiness and a place to call home.
