February is National Cat Health Month, a time to raise awareness about feline wellbeing and the importance of being prepared for unexpected health challenges. At Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, we see firsthand how vital access to veterinary care is for pets like Taco, a stray cat who arrived at our shelter in urgent need of medical attention.
When Taco first arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, she was just a tiny kitten facing an uphill battle. Rescued alongside her siblings, all struggling with severe cat flu, Taco had an additional challenge to overcome. One of her eyes was severely infected, and after a thorough vet assessment, the difficult decision was made to remove it to save her from further pain.
However Taco’s playful personality began to emerge during her recovery, and it became clear that her missing eye would never hold her back. Whether chasing toys, exploring her surroundings, or curling up for cuddles, Taco embraced life with boundless enthusiasm. After months of recovery and countless vet check-ups, Taco was given the all-clear and has since been rehomed, living happily in her forever home.
Anjuli Hakin, Head of Animal Care at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, emphasised the importance of proactive pet care:
“Many people don’t realise how quickly a minor health issue can escalate for a pet. Routine check-ups, early intervention, and having a plan in place for veterinary costs are essential for keeping cats healthy and ensuring they receive the treatment they need.”
Nana Appiah, Partnerships Manager at Waggel, highlighted how responsible pet ownership plays a role in animal welfare:
“We encourage pet owners to think about pet insurance as a way to plan long-term for the health of your pets. By planning for their future, access to veterinary care is one of the best ways to give your pet a happy, healthy life.”
At Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, we see stories of resilience like Taco’s every day. This National Cat Health Month, we encourage pet owners to take proactive steps to safeguard their cat’s wellbeing—through regular vet visits, good nutrition, and planning ahead for unexpected medical costs.
We are also incredibly grateful to Waggel for their generous £3,150 grant through their ‘Second Chance’ initiative, which is helping vulnerable animals like Taco receive the care and rehabilitation they need to find loving homes.
