National Cat Health Month: The Vital Importance of Neutering Your Cat
28th February 2025 UncategorizedThis National Cat Health Month, we’re highlighting the importance of neutering cats with a story that shows just how critical it can be. Neutering your pet helps prevent health complications, reduces unwanted litters, and protects the wellbeing of cats like Valentina.
Valentina arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter heavily pregnant and in need of urgent care. During a traumatic labour, she tragically lost two kittens, while one tiny survivor, Little Eric, defied the odds. Thanks to swift action from the veterinary team at Blythman and Partners, both mother and kitten pulled through. Now, Little Eric is thriving in his forever home, while Valentina continues her recovery, soon to be ready for adoption.
Cats can become pregnant from just four months old, and pregnancy can pose significant risks to their health. Valentina endured a complicated labour, needing an emergency vet visit when one of the kittens became stuck. The vet warned that if they couldn’t remove the kitten, Valentina might not survive. Fortunately, they succeeded, giving Valentina and Little Eric a second chance.
Jill Neary, Rehoming Manager at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter adds “Neutering is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your cat’s health. It helps prevent complications like those Valentina experienced and ensures fewer unwanted litters. Your support to the Shelter enables us to give life saving care to our animals and we thank you for your ongoing support.”
Little Eric has now been adopted into a loving home, where he’s blossomed into a playful, confident kitten. Valentina still needs to undergo her spay surgery before she can find her own family but watch this space if you’d like to give Valentina a loving home.
Neutering not only prevents unwanted litters but also protects against certain cancers and reduces risky behaviours like roaming, when cats wander away from home, often to seek mates, defend territory, or explore. Unneutered cats are more likely to roam, which increases the risk of injury, accidents, getting lost, or contracting diseases from other animals.
