Shelter Brings Joy to Care Home Residents through Care Home Companion Programme
10th May 2024 UncategorizedResidents at Croftdene Care Home in Wallsend were treated to a heartwarming visit from the Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter as part of the Shelter’s Care Home Companion Programme. This initiative aims to help older adults reconnect with animals, providing companionship and boosting well-being.
Iain Riddell, Fundraising & Communications Manager at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, and Niamh Bell, Community Fundraising Officer, visited the care home alongside Willow, one of the Shelter’s beloved office dogs. Willow, a Shih Tzu mix, delighted residents with her presence, dressed in her distinct ‘Newcastle colours’ of black and white.
Research from Washington State University has shown that spending as little as ten minutes with an animal can significantly reduce cortisol levels, improving overall health and well-being. The impact was evident as residents reminisced about their own pets and shared stories with the team. Two ladies fondly recalled their German Shepherds, while another resident had a cat for 18 years. Many in the room expressed their lifelong love of animals.
Iain shared the importance of theinitiative, adding, “Care Home Companion exists to share the joy that animals bring. By spending time with our dogs like Willow, residents can experience improved well-being and a renewed connection with animals. Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter has served its community since 1896, and we’re proud to continue giving back through community outreach.”
The Care Home Companion Programme is a testament to the Shelter’s dedication to its community of pet owners. Besides visiting care homes, the Shelter also donates pet food to food banks in efforts to support families and individuals with the ability to care for their animals. Other initiatives include a recent art competition with schools and more. The initiative aims to expand through volunteer involvement, and the Shelter is actively seeking funding to support its growth.
Michelle Thomas, Activities Co-ordinator for Croftdene Care Home commented, “Finding affordable activities for care home residents can be challenging, especially with rising costs. The Shelter’s community outreach is a fantastic initiative that truly engages our residents and staff. They loved their time with Willow, and we’re already looking forward to the next visit.”
With plans to extend the initiative further, Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter hopes to bring the gift of animal companionship to more care homes, ensuring that everyone can feel the joy and warmth that only animals can bring.
