Belle, an 11-year-old tabby, came to Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter in March, and her gentle nature won us over instantly. While Belle could sometimes be quite reserved and shy, there were plenty of moments when she was incredibly affectionate, seeking closeness and attention. She would roll around alongside the shelter team caring for her, headbutting arms for strokes and curling up to nap beside us. With a heart murmur that required a bit of extra care, she formed a strong bond with our animal care team as they looked after her. She stayed with us for six months, patiently waiting for the right family to see just how special she was.

In September, Belle’s wait was finally over. She found her forever home with a family who could offer her the love and stability she deserved. She surprised them from the very start with her bravery, stepping out of her safe spot under the spare bed to explore her new surroundings. Within an hour, she had wandered into the living room with a cautious but curious sniff, and before long, she was up on the sofa, inspecting her new territory.

Belle’s adventurous spirit only continued to grow. By the second day, she had discovered her favourite spots around the house, including a cosy spot on the sofa bed and the warm comfort of her family’s bed, where she happily settled for naps. Her family shared how she now waits excitedly by her food bowl when she hears the wet food packet.
Although Belle still occasionally retreats to her safe spots, like under the spare bed or inside her little igloo, she has truly impressed her new family with how quickly she has settled in. They had prepared themselves for a quiet first week with Belle hiding away, but she’s surprised them with her confidence, sweet nature, and even ‘zoomies’ around the house.

Now, Belle enjoys life as a cherished member of her new family, finding the perfect balance of comfort, affection, and her own space. She’s eating well, using her litter tray without any issues, and has embraced her new life with the same gentle bravery she showed from day one. Belle’s story is one of finally finding a place to truly call home, where she can give and receive the love she so clearly deserves.
