Jessie and Charlie – Family for Life

Meet Jessie and Charlie, two lovable cats who came to Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter under challenging circumstances. They had been abandoned in their previous home after their owner moved away, leaving them behind. It was the council who brought them into our care, and we were immediately struck by their sweet nature despite the trials they had faced.

When Jessie and Charlie arrived, it was clear they were both struggling with severe gingivitis. Concerned about the discomfort they might be feeling, we ran a series of tests to rule out any underlying conditions. Thankfully, the tests came back negative and Jessie’s gingivitis began to improve. With lots of  TLC and a thorough dental check-up, she started to feel like herself again. Charlie’s journey took a bit more patience. Although he initially seemed to be on the mend, he experienced a flare-up that required further treatment. Ann additional medical test was recommended, which also came back negative. Our vets advised us that Charlie would likely need ongoing dental care to manage his gingivitis in the long term—a condition that will require love, patience, and regular vet visits.

Despite their health challenges, Jessie and Charlie showed plenty of affection during their stay here. Jessie, always playful and curious, quickly became a favourite among our team. She loved soaking up the sun and often claimed the cosiest spots to lounge. Charlie, though a bit more reserved, revealed a gentle side that tugged at the heartstrings. He enjoyed being close to the staff, watching them as if to say thank you for the care he was receiving.

Now renamed Josie and Butters, they’re thriving in a home that truly appreciates their unique personalities. They’ve become the most affectionate, loving companions their new family could hope for. Josie has no problem letting everyone know when she wants attention—she’ll rub herself against your legs and then flop on her back, practically demanding strokes. And if you try to stop? She’s very vocal and may give you a cheeky little nip just to remind you who’s in charge! Butters, on the other hand, is more subtle in his affections but no less determined to be close. He’ll squeeze himself into any space on the sofa or chair you’re sitting on, content to nap right beside you.

Their new family describes them simply as “absolutely lush,” and it’s easy to see why. After a rough start, Josie and Butters have finally found their place, where they are cherished and can let their loving personalities shine.
