Sebastian, a graceful and gentle greyhound, was found wandering alone in Slaley Forest, underweight and wary of the world around him. When he arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter in March 2024, he was shy and uncertain, his slender frame a silent testament to the hardships he had endured. But beneath his reserved demeanour, Sebastian’s gentle spirit quickly shone through, and he soon became a staff favourite with his quiet, affectionate manner.
Despite his loving nature, Sebastian ended up waiting nearly six months for a family of his own. Greyhounds, sadly, often face a longer journey to adoption. Misunderstandings about their needs make people hesitant—many think they need endless exercise and constant space to run. In reality, greyhounds are calm, often timid animals who love nothing more than a few gentle walks and a cozy bed to snooze in. Sebastian was the perfect example of this “couch potato” personality, content to curl up and rest, his graceful frame tucked into the softest corner he could find.
Finally, after months of waiting, a family came along who saw beyond the stereotypes and recognized the gentle soul that Sebastian was. They welcomed him into their lives, giving him a new name—Barney—and a fresh start. Barney quickly bonded with his new family, his loyal heart finding its place in theirs. He’s quick to learn, and his recall is impeccable, making him the perfect companion for city and countryside alike. Whether it’s riding in a car, hopping on the metro, or even taking a bus or train, Barney adapts with ease, a natural fit in every new experience.
Now, Barney lives the life every greyhound deserves: one filled with warmth, comfort, and people who see him for the gentle, loyal companion he is. Strangers on walks can’t help but admire his elegant face and calm demeanour, and his family couldn’t imagine life without him.
