Vax and Henry, two timid young cats, arrived at Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter in August, crammed together in a small Hoover box. The sight of their little faces peeking out told a story of fear and uncertainty. Vax, especially anxious, spent his first few days curled up tightly in his litter tray, finding comfort in the small, familiar space. His behaviour showed us just how overwhelmed he felt in his new surroundings; he wasn’t ready to trust anyone just yet.

With patience, treats, and gentle encouragement, Vax began to show signs of bravery. Bit by bit, he’d emerge from his hiding place, curiosity drawing him closer, until he was brave enough to accept a gentle stroke. Henry, his steadfast companion, was equally nervous but would offer the occasional nuzzle, hinting at the soft heart hidden beneath his shyness.

As the days turned into weeks, Vax and Henry grew more comfortable, allowing their personalities to shine through. Vax began to explore cautiously, while Henry’s quiet affection became more visible, but we knew they needed a quiet, loving home where they could fully relax. And that’s exactly what they found when the perfect family came along, recognising them for the gentle souls they truly are.

Now renamed Winston and Charles, they are cherished members of their new family. Every day, their personalities emerge a little more, revealing playful, affectionate sides that were once hidden. The children in their family absolutely adore them, spending hours playing and snuggling with them, showering Winston and Charles with all the love they could ever want. From two frightened cats hiding in a box to beloved family companions, their journey is a testament to the power of patience, love, and finding the right place to call home.
